Hurry Up, Spring! Confessions of a Winter Hater

Last week’s warm temperatures (Ok, just one day of warmth, but I’ll take it.) have me dreaming of Spring. Visions of green grass and flip-flops. Of growing plants and piglets. Of sweet momma cows birthing their calves. I’ve watched my farmer prep the soil and the pens. Spring is so close, I can almost taste it!

It’s no secret that I do not enjoy the winter months. I guess you could say I just endure them. Yes, I know we have seasons for a reason, but I think I just might like to move to the equator! (Too hot, really, but it sounds good in February.) I plan my daily wardrobe around how cold it will be for me inside my workplace and my nights huddled around the fire that my sweet hubby loves to build.

So when Spring begins to peek it’s head around the corner, I’m all over it. In fact, I grab hold of any and every sign of impending Spring. One thing I have noticed lately is the incredible opportunities that are in my own “neighborhood” for supporting the people that are in the growing business. Since we at Harmony Farms like to grow as much of our food as possible and share it with as many as we can, I wanted to highlight some other “growers.”

Gilbert Creek Gardens flower bouquet

My friend, Blair, is the owner of Gilbert Creek Gardens in Burkburnett, Texas. She grows flowers locally for individuals, weddings, and other events. She also offers flower subscriptions through her CSA program. Did I mention Blair also raises bees? Gilbert Creek Gardens can supply you with local honey! I love Blair’s story. She grew up in Burkburnett, and her flower farm is actually on part of the land that her grandparents farmed when she was a child. What a treasure to have the opportunity to continue her family’s heritage. Take a look at all that she has to offer. Beautiful work!

Morath Orchard Peaches

Another local gem is Morath Orchard in Charlie, Texas. Morath’s has been in Clay County since the early 1980s. It has grown to offer local produce to individuals through their CSA program and the Wichita Falls Farmer’s Market, and to local restaurants and grocery stores. At Morath’s, you also have the opportunity to take a farm tour to educate yourself and your group about the day to day workings of a farm. Or you and your friends could even drive to the farm for a farm-to-table dinner. How fun is that?

Spring is coming, friends! Enjoy the warmer temperatures and the opportunities to learn and grow. And don’t forget to support your local farmer.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, remembering that as members of the same body you are called to live in harmony, and never forget to be thankful for what God has done for you.
